Felt and Canvas Wine Bags
Felt and canvas wine bags do a job paper and leather can't. They're soft, reusable, and they take a logo without looking like a billboard. Buyers come to us when the bottle is a gift, a welcome amenity, or a retail product that needs a fabric hand feel. We make them one bottle at a time, usually with handles, always with the insert rule applied.
You'll pick the fabric first: felt for a matte, dense surface, canvas for something more structured and washable. Then the print method, the handle style, and the closure. Most orders are custom, not stock, because the bag has to fit your bottle, not the other way around. A bag that fits a Burgundy bottle will not fit a tall Riesling, and a bag cut for a champagne punt will leave a still wine swimming. Tell us the bottle before you tell us the colour.
How to choose
Start with the bottle. Give us the diameter at the shoulder and the height to the neck. A bag that's too snug won't slide over the punt; too loose and the bottle tilts in transit. We keep the insert at plus or minus 1 mm so the bottle sits on four points, no unsupported neck. If you're working from a bottle sample, send it. A drawing is good, a sample is better, because the punt depth and the shoulder curve are where bags go wrong.
Then decide what the bag has to survive. A gift bag handed across a counter can be simpler than a bag that gets packed in a courier van and dropped three times before it reaches the customer. Tell us if it's shipping loose or inside a box. That changes the fabric weight and the seam allowance. A bag that ships loose needs a heavier base and a reinforced handle. A bag that sits inside a rigid box can be lighter, but it still has to hold the bottle still during the ride.
Finally, look at the print. Dark fabrics need a different ink or a woven label; light canvas takes screen print well. If the logo is small, embroidery can look sharper than print. We'll show you a blank sample first, then a printed sample, so you see the actual hand feel before you commit. Ask for the blank sample even if you're in a hurry. It costs you a few days and saves you a production run that doesn't match the photo.
Buyer questions
Can I get a felt wine bag for a single bottle with a handle?
Yes. That is our standard structure for felt. The handle is usually a matching fabric loop or a die-cut opening. We set the handle position after the insert is placed, so the bottle hangs straight and the bag does not twist when carried.
What is the difference between felt and canvas for wine bags?
Felt is denser and softer, with a matte surface that hides minor scuffs. Canvas is a woven fabric, so it is more structured and can be washed. Felt is better for gift sets; canvas is better for retail or promotional use where the bag gets reused.
Do you make felt and canvas wine bags for multiple bottles?
We can, but the insert becomes more complex. Two or three bottles need a divider so they do not clink. The same four-point rule applies to each bottle. Tell us the bottle count and we will show you a structure that passes our drop and vibration checks.
What we control
Fabric is cut to the bottle, not to a generic pattern. We hold the bag body to plus or minus 2 mm and the insert to plus or minus 1 mm. The insert itself is usually EVA foam or a paper mould, shaped so the bottle is held at four points. No unsupported neck or shoulder. Then we shake the loaded bag for ten seconds, tilt it 45 degrees, and invert it. If the bottle moves, we adjust the pattern before production. The same rule applies to the handle: it's set after the insert is placed, so the bag hangs straight when carried.
Colour is the other thing that goes wrong. Felt and canvas absorb dye unevenly, so black, deep blue, and burgundy are the hardest to hold. We match to Pantone, approve a first article, and pull samples mid-run. Our in-house checks include a 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded, stacking under 40 kg for 24 hours, and a vibration simulation. If the seam or the handle fails, we fix it before it ships. We also check the creases on any foldable bag: they must not crack when the bag is erected, and the corners should sit at 90 degrees.
