Paper Wine Bags

Paper wine bags are the workhorse of retail gifting. You see them at checkout, in gift sets, at events. They carry one bottle, they get handed over, they get kept. Most buyers come to us with a print file and a deadline. What they actually need is a bag that survives the journey from warehouse to customer without the handle tearing or the base giving out.

We make three families here: black cardstock with gold or red foil, white cardstock with UV or foil, and washable kraft with a leather handle. Each one starts as flat board, gets printed, laminated, creased, folded and glued. The difference between a bag that looks expensive and one that is expensive is in the crease pressure and the glue line, not in the artwork. A bag that gets loaded three times before it reaches the customer has to be built for that.

What to look for

We print on 157 g minimum coated or specialty paper. The board underneath is greyboard at 1200 g or heavier. That combination gives you a bag that holds its shape without being stiff as a box. We do not use recycled greyboard or paper with high moisture content, because those warp after printing and the bag looks tired before it leaves the carton. If your bottle is heavy, a sparkling wine or a thick punt, ask for 1400 g board. It is not much more money and it stops the base from bowing.

Colour is the hardest part. Black, deep blue and burgundy are the worst to hold. We match Pantone references, you approve a first article, and we sample mid-run. If your brand colour is a dark red, send us a physical swatch. A screen shot will not do it. Foil stamping adds a step but it is the one finish that makes a paper bag read as premium from across the room. Hot foil on black cardstock is the most requested combination we see, and it is also the one where a cheap plate shows every flaw.

Handles are where paper bags fail first. A twisted paper handle might tear under a full bottle if the attachment is weak. We reinforce the handle points and test them before the run. For a heavier presentation, ask about a leather handle on kraft. It changes the feel entirely and it is the detail a buyer notices when they pick the bag up. If you are shipping long distances, a flat paper handle with a strong glue line can be safer than a twisted one, because it distributes the load across a wider area.

Buyer questions

Can I order a small quantity for a launch event?

Yes. We have flexible MOQ for custom orders. You will still go through the same proofing and first-article approval, but the run can be short. Tell us your event date and we will work backwards from it. Air freight is available if your deadline is tight.

Do you provide a sample before mass production?

We make two types. A blank sample shows the structure, handle and base. A printed sample shows the final artwork and foil. We recommend the printed sample for any new design. It costs a little more but it catches colour shifts and crease problems before the full run.

What if the bottle does not fit the bag?

Send us your bottle dimensions or the bottle itself. We check the neck diameter, shoulder height and base width. The bag is built around those numbers. Our control tolerance on the bag body is plus or minus 2 mm. The bottle should slide in without forcing and sit upright without leaning.

What we control

The insert rule is simple: the bottle is held at four points, no unsupported neck or shoulder. For a paper bag, that means the base is wide enough and the side walls are tall enough that the bottle does not lean against the handle holes. We check by shaking the loaded bag for 10 seconds, tilting it 45 degrees, and inverting it. No movement, no slide, no release. Our control tolerance is plus or minus 1 mm on the insert and plus or minus 2 mm on the bag body.

Before anything ships, we run in-house checks. A 1.2 m six-face drop test with the bottle loaded. Stacking top load of 40 kg or more for 24 hours. Truck and sea vibration simulation with no internal movement. These are what we do on our own floor so you do not get a call from a customer with a torn bag and a broken bottle. The drop test alone catches most failures: a weak handle, a glue line that gives, a base that pops open. We would rather find that here than have a courier find it.
